01Chinatown Orlando

Chinatown Orlando opened in 2002 as a plaza of more than sixty businesses under red-tiled roofs, entered through a traditional gate on West Colonial Drive. Restaurants, bakeries, bubble-tea shops, a dim sum room and Enson Market, the Chinese supermarket at its center, make it the city's everyday Asian food district; a little further west on the same road, H Mart opened its Florida store, one of the largest in the chain.

Lunar New Year is the season that brings visitors. The Tet Festival, the Vietnamese new-year celebration, fills the Central Florida Fairgrounds a mile east for a weekend in February with free admission; the Dragon Parade Lunar New Year marches through Mills 50 later the same month; and Celebrate Lunar runs a ticketed day of performances, lion dances and food at the end of January. Families come for the weekend and want a kitchen and bedrooms, not a hotel.

• Weekend mornings are the busy time at the plaza; dim sum and the markets are quietest on weekday afternoons.
• The plaza has its own parking; on festival weekends at the fairgrounds, park at the house and drive over early.
